As adults, we understand the many sacrifices that were made for us and our country, but how do you, as a parent, explain this to your child?
Often, children use their senses – seeing, hearing and touching something helps a child better understand. So what is there to see, hear and touch in order to understand what Veterans Day is all about? By visiting a hidden gem in Orange County.
Lyon Air Museum is the perfect place to take your child to teach them about Veterans Day.
Lyon Air Museum is located on the west side of John Wayne Airport. The foundation of this museum is an operational fleet of historically significant aircraft, which offers a glimpse back into the history of our country.
As you walk through the doors, you are instantly transported back in time and are surrounded by aircraft, military vehicles, and a vast array of memorabilia. Here you will have the opportunity to explore the aircraft and vehicles used by the men who served in the military and learn about the women who helped build them. There is even a movie theater featuring World War II newsreels where you can learn about Rosie the Riveter.
Have you ever wondered what it looked like inside a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, or how big the missiles were that were fired from a plane during the war? There are touch screen monitors throughout the museum where you can watch short videos about D-Day, invasion of Normandy or bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Glass cases hold an extensive display of military uniforms, medals, letters, newspapers, and a variety of memorabilia from our Veteran’s.
Volunteer docents, who are all veterans, are always there to answer any questions you may have – and are more than happy to share a story or two.
Whether you explore the Lyon Air Museum on your own or schedule a tour hosted by volunteer docents, your family can have a unique experience that is both educational and fun.
Lyon Air Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and for special events). General admission is $12, seniors and veterans $9, children (ages 5-17) $6, and under age 5 are free. Special pricing is offered for groups of 10 or more and pre-arranged school groups are free.
